Oct. 17: Inferno Weekly Update

Here is our weekly update of events and information for Greystone Centennial Middle School.

Notice of Outbreak - Respiratory Illness

AHS has declared an Outbreak at Greystone for Respiratory Illness due to a large number of absences related to illness. They are asking families to be aware of symptoms that students may show and to follow some precautions to reduce the spread of illness in the school. Please read their Notice of Respiratory Illness Outbreak letter.

The school will also be putting in some additional measures to break the illness transmission cycle. These measures focus on cleaning and the choice of activities at school. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Term 1 Parent-Teacher Interviews

Our Grade 5-9 conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, October 18th (in-person) and Thursday, October 20th (virtually) from 4:00-7:00 pm. The split between in-person and online comes directly from a community survey that was conducted last year. We will be evaluating future conference formats (in-person vs online) after this round based on use. If you need more information, please see our website or contact the office.

“Omanitewak” - Alberta Mentoring Summit

A team of Greystone students and staff are participating in the Alberta Mentoring Summit (virtually) on Oct. 20, to help support Teen Mentoring in schools. Participants will have the opportunity tolearn from our summit keynote, Dr. Leona Makokis, in an exploration of mentorship through the lens of identity and belonging through the Cree Language…Omanitewak, our summit theme means providing the best of ourselves to our community.”

Halloween / Spookapalooza Information

We are happy to announce the return of Spookapalooza on Monday, Oct. 31. This is a fun afternoon of activities on the day of Halloween. Students have a choice in the activities that they participate in over the afternoon, including a $2 dance (with a professional DJ). Students will be able to select one activity in each one-hour block or stay in one activity all afternoon.

Students are welcome to wear their costumes in the afternoon. Costumes should be appropriate for a school setting (no offensive logos, slogans, etc. ) and we would ask that no one brings any weapons (even fake ones) as part of their costume. Additionally, all masks need to be removable.

Ice Cream & Pizza Sales

Friends of Greystone Society (FOGS) will be selling ice cream on Wednesday, Oct. 19th at lunch recess for $1 per scoop.

They will also be selling Pizza for $2 per slice on Wednesday, Oct. 26th.

Social Emotional Learning

New this year, Greystone staff is using the CASEL framework to organize our work around social and emotional learning. If you would like more information on this framework and how it might be helpful at home, please check out the CASEL website.

If you are interested in learning more about Social Emotional Learning as a parent, the ERLC (Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium) has a 5-part virtual workshop, especially for parents. It’s a free workshop, and you can register with the ERLC here.
