Message from Friends of Greystone Society - 50/50 and Raffle Baskets!

FOGS is having the Christmas Basket Raffle for Snowed In on Dec 19 again this year and we need to enlist some help from Greystone staff, students, and families.

For the raffle, we will have donation boxes and collect donations from each grade/class for the

following themes:

Grade 9 - Spa Day: ideas include socks, lotions, bubble bath, face masks

Grade 8 - Warm Winter Nights: ideas include socks, coffee, hot chocolate, tea, mugs

Grade 7 - Movie Night: ideas include popcorn bags, candy, drinks, DVD/Blu Rays

Grade 6 - Game Night: ideas include board games, card games, pens/pencils, mad libs

Grade 5 - Christmas Sweets & Baking: ideas include baking ingredients/kits, spatulas, bowls,

cookie cutters, cookie decorations/sprinkles etc.

Each class will have a donation box labelled with their theme!

Donation items can be as small or as big as people wish- even a bag of chocolate chips or socks from the dollar store can be something someone brings in if they want to participate.

We would also accept donations for the actual baskets themselves if anyone has some as well.

We had everything from wicker baskets to bowls to hold the items in.

On Friday, December 13, we will collect the items and assemble them into Raffle Baskets to

raffle off for $2/ticket at Snowed In at Greystone on Tuesday, December 19. Draws would be

made at the end of the night and prizes can be collected at the school.

On behalf of FOGS, thank you everyone for your help with this fundraiser!

Hour of Code

Students participated in the Global Event Dec.  3-6 in library and french class. Hopefully students  will continue to learn on their own www.hourofcode.com. Anyone can code and learn computer science including parents!

Loaning Chromebooks

We have noticed an increase in the amount of one-time-use chromebooks being borrowed from the library lately. Please know, your child/children are not guaranteed to borrow one if they typically BYOD - we do not have enough to outfit each individual student.  This service is for the occasional time you forget and not to be borrowed on a daily basis. It is your child's responsibility to have it charged and brought to school daily. If you have a problem with your home computer, please see your teacher or Mrs. Marshall and we will work on getting one assigned to your child on a more permanent basis.

Scent Aware

We have some students and adults that react to strong scents and perfumes. These reactions are mostly in the form of severe headaches, such as migraines and may also trigger an asthmatic attack. Deodorant is great, too much perfume or cologne is not! Please keep these thoughts in mind for your children and yourself when you are coming to the school to visit

  • Be considerate of those who are sensitive to fragrances.
  • If you do use scented products, use them sparingly.
  • A general guideline for scented products is that the scent should not be detectable more than an arm’s length away from you.
  • Do not apply scented products in a public area.

Rabbit Hill Ski and Snowboard Club - Repeat

The deadline for forms has been extended to December 13th. There are only a few spots left. See Mr. Arndt for a form and additional information.

Counsellor’s Corner- Mrs. Scheidl

December is a bouncy sleigh ride of emotions for our students as they finish up their first term studies,  get excited about holidays and think about upcoming family celebrations.  This month is a great time to focus on self care and personal wellness so that we do not become overwhelmed by the business of the season and school. Balancing the workload becomes ultra important and managing stress is the key to a joyful holiday season.  Here are some ideas to help your child(ren) find balance:

  1. Teach them to take small movement breaks when they are working hard and long on homework. Here is a link about movement breaks.
  2. Sleep and rest are very important tools in keeping emotions stable - form good sleeping habits for the winter months. Check out this link from Alberta Health Services.
  3. Play Bingo - here is a self care bingo card that kids/adults can fill in to make sure they are balancing fun, joy filled activities to help them get through the goals/expectations of the season.

If your child is struggling with mental wellness, overwhelmed by expectations or is having a challenging time personally, communicating with teachers may be helpful in keeping him/her safe, balanced and feeling supported.  Please reach out to school personnel anytime for extra support or just to inform them your child is going through a rough patch.  We would love to help.
