Inferno News: November 29, 2024

Here is our weekly update of events and information for Greystone Centennial Middle School.

Dress for the Weather

As we plunge into winter weather, it is important that students are coming to school ready to go outside. We are outside 15 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at lunch. We follow Environment Canada's weather statements, and students go outside for recess until we reach -23 or lower, with or without the windchill.

Snowed In

Our annual Snowed In event will be held on Thursday, December 19 from 6:00-8:00 PM

For those families that are new to Greystone, this evening will include musical performances from our students in Grade 5 through 9 as well as a variety of family centered activities throughout the building.  We encourage all our families to attend!

What to expect:

Counsellor’s Corner- Mrs. Scheidl

December is a bouncy sleigh ride of emotions for our students as they finish up their first term studies,  get excited about holidays and think about upcoming family celebrations.  This month is a great time to focus on self care and personal wellness so that we do not become overwhelmed by the business of the season and school. Balancing the workload becomes ultra important and managing stress is the key to a joyful holiday season.  Here are some ideas to help your child(ren) find balance:

  1. Teach them to take small movement breaks when they are working hard and long on homework. Here is a link about movement breaks.
  2. Sleep and rest are very important tools in keeping emotions stable - form good sleeping habits for the winter months. Check out this link from Alberta Health Services.
  3. Play Bingo - here is a self care bingo card that kids/adults can fill in to make sure they are balancing fun, joy filled activities to help them get through the goals/expectations of the season.

If your child is struggling with mental wellness, overwhelmed by expectations or is having a challenging time personally, communicating with teachers may be helpful in keeping him/her safe, balanced and feeling supported.  Please reach out to school personnel anytime for extra support or just to inform them your child is going through a rough patch.  We would love to help.

  • Tuesday, December 10
  • Tuesday, January 14

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact FOGS vice-president Chantelle at cschenk73@gmail.com or by phone at 780-983-4722

Career Fair - UPDATE

Due to the Grade 9 Quebec trip, we have shifted our CAREER FAIR to Tuesday, January 28th from 9:30-12:30. Greystone’s Career Fair Committee is asking parents, community members and friends to come in and speak about their career choice and give students an insight to a career that they may have never considered or already have an interest in and want to find out more.

If you would be interested in being one of our presenters for the day please email Janie Scheidl at janie.scheidl@psd.ca with your name, career, a brief description of what you do, and a phone number at which you can be contacted.  You may also leave a message with reception in the general office.  If you are able to volunteer your time, we would be so grateful.  Refreshments will be provided.

Share a Thought Survey- repeat

We want your feedback!

Use our Share a Thought Survey to let us know what is on your mind.  We work hard as a staff to consider your feedback when making decisions regarding many aspects of the school.
