Inferno News: October 28, 2024

Here is our weekly update of events and information for Greystone Centennial Middle School.

Volleyball Junior A Finals

Both our Junior A Girls and Boys volleyball teams were able to secure their spot in the finals on Monday, October 28!  Both these games will take place in the GCMS gym - Girls @ 4:30; Boys @ 6:00.  Come cheer our amazing athletes on!!

School Issued Chromebooks
Reminder - school issued chromebooks must remain at school.  If a student has homework and no access to technology at home they will need to make alternative arrangements with their teacher to finish their assignments during the school day.

SpookaPalooza! - Thursday, October 31 (PM)

Our annual Halloween Dance/Activity afternoon will be running on Thursday, October 31 in the afternoon.  In the morning, students will work through their regular schedule and can expect to be learning as they would any other day.  Each class will have the opportunity to head to the canteen to purchase snacks for the afternoon (see price list below).  These snacks will be saved for the afternoon activities and stored in classrooms/lockers.

If students would like to participate in the school dance (with a professional DJ) during the afternoon the cost is $4 - grade 9 students will be pre-selling dance admittance in the morning.  If your child is not interested in the dance there are a variety of activities rooms available for the afternoon including: Art Room/Quiet Room/Technology Room/ Board Game Room/Just Dance.

At lunch students will be allowed to change into their costumes - please remember there are no weapon replicas or masks allowed.  After lunch students will meet in their homeroom where attendance will be taken and instructions for the afternoon will be reviewed.  There will be a final homeroom check-in at 3:30 where attendance will be taken again, and students will clean up to head home for the evening.  Classes will run as normal on Friday, November 1!!

Please remember as you send students after Halloween to limit the halloween candy that makes its way to school in lunches to 1-3 small treats per day!  Our staff will be encouraging students to save these treats for consumption during the lunch break.

Grade 9 Quebec Exchange Opportunity

We're thrilled to announce that we're participating in another student exchange trip to Quebec City! We'll be heading to Quebec at the end of January, and we're looking forward to welcoming our Quebec student guests to Alberta in April.

This exchange is open to all grade 9 students, regardless of your current French class enrollment. It's a fantastic opportunity for a cultural exchange!

We'll share more details as the trip approaches. Stay tuned for updates!

Oil Kings Tickets: Grade 5/6 Choir

This is a reminder that all Oil Kings ticket orders are due by Monday, Oct. 28th. If you need help ordering tickets or have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Putt at genna.putt@psd.ca. The Grade 5/6 Choir will be performing on Wednesday, November 20th at Rogers Place.

Remembrance Day- Parent Volunteers

If you have served/are currently serving in the military, reserves, or RCMP and would like to march in our Remembrance Day ceremony, please reach out to Mrs. Putt (genna.putt@psd.ca) for further details. The assembly is happening on the morning of Thursday, Nov. 7th.

Book Fair

Thank you to all the students and families for supporting the book fair!  We reached our goal of $5000 which put us in the 50% range for rewards towards the library and literacy for novels, guided reading, novel studies and student resources.

Individual Education Plans - repeat

If your child has an Individual Education Plan, you should have received or will be receiving an email to review and sign the IEP. It is very important that we have your input, feedback, and consent, as this is our legal documentation of additional supports that are put in place for your child. The IEP review and consent is done within the PowerSchool parent portal, and not on the App. If you are having trouble accessing the IEP, please contact your child's teacher.

Remembrance Day - repeat

For our upcoming Remembrance Day ceremony at Greystone, we invite families to submit photos of loved ones who have served or are currently serving their country. This includes members of the Cadets, Army, Navy, Girl Guides, and other organizations. Please forward photos to Patty Nicholls at patricia.nicholls@psd.ca

Photos are being accepted until November 1st.

Kinette Christmas Hampers - repeat

Once again as the holiday season approaches, the Spruce Grove Kinette volunteers are working toward the 51st Annual Christmas Hamper campaign. Last year donations were able to assist 710 families in Spruce Grove and East Parkland!  In the spirit of giving and in hopes of making this season a little brighter for those in need Greystone will be collecting new, unwrapped toys (for children aged 17 and under) and gift cards.

Items will be accepted until Friday, December 13th at Greystone Centennial Middle School, so that they can be sent to the Kinette collection site and distributed to families in need this Christmas.

Thank you so much for all of the support to the local Christmas Hamper Campaign that makes such a difference to families in our community!

Career Fair - repeat

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Friends of Greystone,

Greystone School is planning our 2nd annual CAREER FAIR event for our grade 7-9’s on Thursday, January 30th, 2025 (9:30-12:30). Greystone’s Career Fair Committee is asking parents, community members and friends to come in and speak about their career choice and give students an insight to a career that they may have never considered or already have an interest in and want to find out more.

If you would be interested in being one of our presenters for the day please email Janie Scheidl at janie.scheidl@psd.ca with your name, career, a brief description of what you do, and a phone number at which you can be contacted.  You may also leave a message with reception in the general office.  If you are able to volunteer your time, we would be so grateful.  Refreshments will be provided.
